When finding a new job in the supply chain discipline, there’s one thing to keep in mind: it’s okay to step outside of your comfort zone. In fact, taking chances is encouraged, and it will probably benefit your career in the long-run.
On a daily basis, most people perform the same routine, over and over again. From a career perspective, there are probably certain skills and tasks that you routinely use, and when someone asks you to work on another project, you automatically step into using those same skills. When you stay in your comfort zone, however, everything around you tends to stay the same. Life and your career don’t seem to move forward because you’re not providing the momentum that they need to do so.

Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

The momentum you need comes from stepping outside of your comfort zone and into the realm of new skills and learning. This is where the magic happens. Apply for that job that will require some training and teach you new skills. The next time your supervisor assigns people to a new project, ask if you can be involved in an aspect of the project you haven’t handled before. Who knows — you might find out that you’re really amazing at new skill and that you want to seek a new job that allows you to focus on that skill more precisely.

If you never step out of your comfort zone, you’ll never expand your skill set or aptitude. Imagine being the same “you” ten years from now. That doesn’t sound too appealing, does it? It’s all too easy to put off making chances and tackling projects with which you are unfamiliar, but the truth is, there’s no better time than now.

This is especially true if you’re working at finding a new job in the supply chain discipline. Don’t look for a job doing exactly what you did in your last position. Take advantage of this opportunity to do something new and uncomfortable, expand your skill set, and expand your mind.
