plan your supply chain career path

One of the most difficult decisions you have to make in your lifetime is finding your career.  Discovering your ideal career path can be the greatest cornerstone in a happy and fulfilling life, but sometimes it can feel like there are too many options and too few opportunities to find a good job. If you’re feeling lost, try these tips for getting your career path on track so that you can begin finding a new job in the supply chain discipline that better suits your goals.

Map Out Your Career Path

One vital step that will give you some clarity as to how you are doing and what you need to do is to map out your career path. Mapping out your career path involves figuring out what your dream job would be in your field of work as well as figuring out what kind of jobs and skills you need to have before you can obtain that dream job. Your career path should contain goals that you can reach – such as figuring out at what time during your life you should have a certain position and skill set.

More often than not, that next step in the progression of your career will require education and certification with CSCMP or APICS. These skills are often developed over time with experience.  By looking ahead and mapping your career path, you can see what types of skills, education and certifications you’ll end up having to have in order to progress later on, thereby allowing you to prepare for those moments right now.  By breaking down the requirements and steps, the daunting task of creating a fulfilling career becomes more manageable, allowing you to take interim positions with the knowledge that they are helping you develop your larger goal.

There’s a good chance that you’ll also need to obtain visibility and recognition in order to achieve certain positions throughout your career path. This can be done by cultivating high job performance levels, taking on highly visible projects, and even winning certain awards. These are all goals that you can set that are achievable and that will help you progress down your career path.
